Maximising Engagement

  • Allowing time for familiarity.
  • Promote eye contact: “Hello Mary”.
  • Use  clear language…. Short sentences with key words/appropriate communication modality i.e. pictures, sign language.
  • Being aware of sensory preferences and over-selectivity of any.
  • Balancing social skills training and other objectives: always include an aspect of engaging meaningfully in all learning.
  • The use of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) which involves breaking skills down (see next slides).
  • Use of recording format: write down, video, graph progress.
  • Use of prompts: can be verbal, visual, aural, demonstrations.
  • The use of reinforcements/rewards: these are specific to the individual.
  • Use of incidental teaching: when teaching one skill another aspect of learning can be introduced.
