A practitioner’s guide to helping children and adults with autism spectrum disorder to move effectively and efficiently. This unique 2 day online intensive autism training with particular emphasis on addressing fundamental movement skill training.
Why do we need this? Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder have delayed movement skills such as running, catching, throwing, balance and coordination.   These skills do not come naturally to them, hence they need to be taught.
  • Learning these skills will help autistic people to manage anxiety, tantrums and difficult behaviours.
  • Learning these skills will provide opportunities to improve problems with sensitivity to touch, smell, sound,  need for deep pressure and address poor balance/coordination.
  • Learning these skills will provide opportunities to develop speech, language and comprehension.
  • Leaning these skills will provide opportunity to develop social skills and to engage with others.
  • Learning these skills will provide opportunity to feel better emotionally as they get more “happy hormones” released.

Description

This unique 2 day online intensive autism training has particular emphasis on addressing fundamental movement skill training i.e. running, catching, kicking, balance etc. The package also comes with a downloadable “GetautismActive” handbook. . The moment piece will benefit from an “active” workshop later in the year  too.
The training is divided as follows:
  1. ASD Awareness and Understanding: Develop a deep knowledge of ASD.
  2. Teaching and learning Interventions that can be used for children and adults with ASD: This module provides an outline of different approaches that can support a student with ASD to learn and engage.
  3. Exploring and understanding Sensory Integration issues i.e. This module provides the background and supportive strategies to difficulties with integrating different senses for example sensitivity  to sounds, smells, tastes, pressure, visual stimulation etc.
  4. Fundamental Movement Skill Training; this module explores the basics of how movement is taught and learned, how to assess different skills i.e. catching, hopping, balance; how to plan programmes, how to implement these programmes and finally how to evaluate progress. The “GetAutismActive”resource kit is also online and downloadable as a support for teaching each skill. It includes video demonstrations of each, a checklist of the parts of each movement, voice over prompts and a sample incidental teaching and learning section. The handbook provides a written version of the checklist and guidelines on how to reflect on each session and how to get feedback from students. These movement skills can be used throughout each day to help a student to regulate, feel better and engage with others.
